PAU2240 sheet pile structures had been made from PAU2250 elements, connected by groove and tongue. The anchors were chains leading to anchor plates back behind of the structure. In case of weak soils forming the upper soil strata the walls have been anchored by inclined piles or by pile racks. This Manual is not all-inclusive. Other elements may be added or conveyed individually to Contractors to whom they expressly apply PAU2240 .

Retaining walls shall be designed to withstand lateral earth and water pressures, the effects of surcharge loads, the self-weight of the PAU2250 wall and in special cases, earthquake loads in accordance with the general principles specified in this section. The purpose of this Safety and Health Manual is to outline a plan for preventing job related accidents.

The Manual sets forth the many elements that all Contractors and Subcontractors (of every tier) must include in their safety program. Later the PAU 2260 wall elements were U-shaped steel profiles, connected together with bolted on Z-profiles. These elements combined a higher stiffness with a length depending to the construction height. Some Contractors, by nature of the specific type of work being performed, must integrate other essential elements within their own safety program.

Sheet piles retaining walls shall be designed for a service life based on PAU2260 or PAU 2240 consideration of the potential long-term effects of material deterioration on each of the material components comprising the PAU 2250 wall. Permanent retaining walls should be designed for a minimum service life of 50 years. It is the Contractor’s and each employee’s responsibility to ensure that they comply with all safety directives required by law, and that their own safety program includes such compliance.

The invention of the Larssen interlock in 1904 was the starting impulse for an accelerated development of the PAU2260 construction method which is not yet finished. Nowadays sheet pile structures are most widely used for quay PAU 2240 walls. The role of Construction Safety Management in achieving construction safety and health includes the oversight for project safety. This function does not supersede, override, or take precedence over that of construction Contractors, who are ultimately responsible for the safety and health of their personnel and protection of their property. The PAU 2240 quality of in-service performance is an important consideration in the design of permanent retaining walls. The key function of Construction Safety Management, as it relates to PAU2260 construction safety and health, is to monitor Contractor compliance with safety and health standards required by law.

This Manual sets forth basic responsibilities, guidelines, rules, and regulations for all personnel involved in construction at the PAU 2250 Port. Due to the development in shipping during the last decades design depth of quay walls increased dramatically, resulting in combined sheet pile walls with heavy profiles. The intent is to enhance and supplement any safety and health standards that are required by contract documents, or by law, and are applicable to Port construction projects. The Manual PAU2250 does not cover the full spectrum of published safety and health standards that are mandated by law. Temporary retaining walls should be designed for a minimum service life of 5 years.

Permanent walls shall be designed to retain an aesthetically pleasing appearance, and be essentially maintenance free throughout their design PAU 2260 service life.

This development is a challenge for the designer to find structural solutions for an optimal capacity utilization of standard structures. But it is recognized, that the conventional anchored steel sheet piling wall, fixed in the ground, has reached PAU 2250 and PAU 2260 dimensions which can not be enlarged.

The Service Load Design Method shall be used for the design of retaining walls except where noted otherwise.Consequently, Contractors shall not assume that they are responsible only for those PAU2240 standards, which are referenced in this Manual, or that those standards are current and quoted as published.
