At first sight the designer of a sheet piles wall seems to have a high degree of PAU2760 and PAU2770 freedom to chose between many different design concepts. In practice however the local construction conditions predominate the design. Minimize hazards/disruptions to the traveling public by PAU 2770 controlling access to construction areas, following established safety procedures to avoid impacts to airport operational systems, and secure work areas adjacent to those spaces PAU2760 frequented by the public. Selection of appropriate wall type is based on an assessment of the design loading, depth to adequate foundation support, presence of deleterious environmental PAU 2780 factors, physical constraints of the site, cross-sectional geometry of the site both existing and planned, settlement potential, desired aesthetics, constructibility, maintenance, and cost.

Rigid Gravity and Semi-Gravity PAU2780 Walls Rigid gravity walls may be constructed of stone masonry, unreinforced PAU2780 concrete, or reinforced concrete. Horizontal anchors with anchor walls or anchor plates are easy to install, but their bearing capacity is often restricted when PAU 2760 soils in the upper regions are weak. Inclined anchor piles reach down to soils with higher strength. Thus the retaining wall itself is not affected by the operational loads and has to keep soil pressure only. Additionally to this load relieving the superstructure screens the earth pressure.
Sheet pile walls can be used in both PAU 2770 cut and fill PAU 2780 applications. They have relatively narrow base widths. They are generally not used when deep foundations are required. They are most economical at low wall heights. Bending moments of the wall depend on the position of the anchor and the stiffness of the support in the soil. They can be reduced, when the anchor is placed in a deeper position, this is however often PAU 2780 restricted with respect of the water level when the wall is constructed in the open sea.
