1. Waterfront Project, Florida, USA.
Project Details: USA market has been very strict on foreign steel products. Before this project, the client received different offers from USA and European mills. The quality is good, but price is too high compared with the limited budget. Then they approached Grand Piling for a solution. After technical evaluation and takes with project designer and engineers, the clients finally placed the order to Grand Piling.Calculations were carried out by Grand Piling in order to ensure that the stringent requirements of the Client and the Contractor were met whilst at the same time the budget constraints needed to be adhered to. 1200 tons of IIIW and 750 tons of IVW type hot rolled sheet piles are used in this project. Extra clutches were sent along with the shipment to ensure that if any special corners were needed to be turned or obstacles caused a variation in the driving line. The sheet piles with their wide profile made an ideal selection due to their very limited clutches per metre of wall. The sealing of the clutch is at least half that of other sheet piles and this also means less risk of seepage for the Contractor.
2. Vizhinzam project, India.
Project Details: For this project, local stockiest suggested second hand AZ sheet piles. This option could not provide an adequate water proof area for the construction to proceed in a timely manner. The bad surfaces conditions of second hand sheet piles and the loose interlocks are the main problem.Grand Piling came in with new AZ42 and AZ26 sheet piles newly produced in our China mills. The lengths are various from 8m-20m due to the different coils conditions in India. 3200 tons in totally were used. Grand Piling not only worked with the owners but the contractor had constant site visits and communication from Grand Piling both during the design stage and the implementation stage of the project. Designs of the wall system took into account the preferred method of construction detailed.Overall stability of the Main Wall, tieback and anchor wall structure was determined using representative soil parameters. A (c’’) reduction analysis was then performed using the PLAXIS software to determine the overall geotechnical factor of safety. For static load cases, the target factor of safety on overall stability was 1.4
3. Infrastructure construction, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Project Details: 3500 tons of PU18, PU22, PU28 sheet piles were shipped to Rotterdam port by bulk vessels. The project was split in two phases: the construction of a new weir between the existing weir and the adjacent housing complex. This was quite helpful when, as specified on the layout, the driving contractor had to close the cofferdam with a single PU sheet pile, a 600 mm wide U-pile. No additional equipment was required for this task. The sheet piles had to be driven into a deep-seated impervious layer, overlain by a relatively dense soil layer. The chosen solution was pre-boring along the axis of the sheet pile walls down to approximately 0.5 m above tip elevation, and to replace the excavated soil by an adequate fill. This allowed the sheet piles to be pressed down to final grade without any problems or vibrations. The job has been accomplished successfully based on a long-term collaboration with the design engineer and the project owner. Another reason for success was the availability at the right moment of the first “Sill Worker” Press.
4. Shipyard Batu Layang - Pontianak, Indonesia.
Project Details: Grand Piling has been the biggest supplier in Indonesia market during the past years. Numerous orders and inquiries are generated from Jarkata, Semarang, Tandjungpriok, Surabaya. Although Grand Piling can do the design work ourselves, this job was designed by an European company.
1560 tons of AZ18-700 in various length are used. Half sheet piles were painted on the top 7 metres on the front side and the top 4.0 metres on the back side with 375 microns of Jotamastic 87 black paint. All painting works were carried out in the factory in China. Analysis was performed for a variety of load cases, considering stage by stage construction and the resulting cumulative effects. These piles are for de-watering works, groundwater cut-off walls and pollution control situations. This pile with its light weight, wide profile and minimal clutches also provides an attractive commercial proposition for retaining walls and other applications. No moment reduction will be applied to the walls due to relative soil / wall stiffness considerations.he results obtained from the analysis of local stability using the above considerations were considered Design Values with no further addition of factors or extension of the embedment.
5. Copergas, GDK, Brazil.
Project Details: The main dock, constructed of sheet piling, has a maximum depth of 9,80 metres and offers a total quay length of 1 050 metres. Installing the 4 500 tonnes of sheet piling in soil with very difficult geotechnical characteristics required a specific piling procedure to be designed in advance of the main scheme. The size chosen is L605 larssen interlock sheet piles. The sheet piles shall be installed by means of a variable frequency vibrator with an adjustable eccentric moment capable of generating a minimum centrifugal force of 3 000kN. The jetting system to consist of 4 jets of 3/4" diameter welded to each pair of sheet piles.
6. KOC project, Kuwait.
Project Details: The service life of the structure is 50 years. To protect the immersion zone, the design engineer opted for a cathodic protection with sacrificial anodes. The soil is quite heterogeneous, ranging from soft sandy clays to very compact sands with SPT values above 90.2800 tons of AZ18-700 sheet piles are used in this project. We also supplied the tie-rods as part of the whole foundation solutions package. The threads of the tie-rods are M 115, with a 90 mm diameter shaft, 500 mm long upset threads on one end, and eye tie-rods on the other end. The yield strength of the tie-rods is 500 MPa. Commissioning of this quay wall is foreseen by end of 2012.
7. SBM Project, Pakistan.
Project Details: 1200 tons of both U and Z type sheet piles are used. Shipping port is Karachi. During the construction, the sheet piles were braced against the existing pier. To guarantee the impermeability of the cofferdam, the sheet pile interlocks were filled with an inexpensive hydrocarbon product that was easy to handle. The Steel Sheet Piles were installed with a vibrohammer ICE 223, which had an additional weight of 2 tonnes, to permit easier penetration in the sandy harbour ground. Once the foundation was complete, the space between the sheet piles was in filled. The sheet piles were then tied back to the pier and the struts were removed.
8. Gas Natural, Colombia.
Project Details: The gas company is currently rehabilitating the gas lines, steel sheet piles have once again been chosen as a retaining wall. This project constitutes a good example of how steel sheet piles can contribute to cost-effective foundation solutions, and above all, to the preservation of the environment. Traditional Asia types IIW and IIIW are chosen for this gas natural projects. Its high stiffness allowed it to be driven with a vibratory hammer at least 1 m deeper than the pre-drilling, which guarantees sufficient embedment of the toe of the pile, and minimizes the deflections of the retaining wall.Total quantity is 2400 tons. The pre-drilling of a hole, followed by a granular fill, loosened the soil at the location of the sheet pile wall. Their excellent state of preservation will allow the contractor to reuse them as temporary retaining elements in future projects.
9. KURT Urban Partners, USA.
Project Details: The clients ordered 5500 tons of AZ28-700 sheet piles in various lengths for this projects. Once approval was received the manufacturing was carried out in the piling factory for delivery to the site. As always, our personnel were on site to assist contractors during the beginning of the installation process. Several recommendations were made regarding piling guides and handling processes. Installation was done by pitching the sheet piles in a piling frame and driving to refusal with an ICE 815 vibro hammer. Piles were then driven to the final required level using an IHC S90 hydraulic hammer, together with a pile helmet. We provided efficient Dawson Lifting Shackles that helped increase the productivity of the installation, while ensuring maximum safety during the process. Most of the time, steel sheet piles act as retaining structure for excavation works. They can be installed easily and extracted anytime when the construction work is completed. The steel sheet piles can then be re-used and carried forward for later construction stages.
10. Shuqaiq II Independent Project, Saudi Arabia.
Project Details: The needed a cofferdam that was able to be de-watered in order to allow the construction of the bridge piers. The previous option used was second hand AZ36 sheet piles. This option could not provide an adequate water proof area for the construction to proceed in a timely manner. So forced with substantial delays on the first cofferdam, clients decided to use Grand Piling for the second cofferdam. We designed a custom sheet pile and called it the GPZ36-700. This sheet pile was a variation to the catalogue issued GPZ sheet piles. The sheet pile is designed with an open clutch suitable for post installation grout sealing. The pile is for de-watering works, groundwater cut-off walls and pollution control situations. This pile with its light weight, wide profile and minimal clutches also provides an attractive commercial proposition for retaining walls and other applications. Total amount is 4100 tons in various length.
